Common questions ahead of a bariatric /weight loss procedure may sound like “can I still drink alcohol after my procedure?” or “I have my son’s wedding soon, can I enjoy a drink?” – Simply put, the answer is YES!
For those who choose to drink, alcohol is consumed for a variety of reasons. These include having a drink during social gatherings and celebrations or using alcohol to unwind after a stressful day. However, as with all discretionary foods and beverages, moderation is key!
Here are a few key considerations and tips for those who have undergone bariatric procedures and are navigating reintroducing alcohol.
Key Considerations:
- Increased sensitivity: After bariatric surgery, your body absorbs alcohol more easily, leading to a faster onset of intoxication. This is because the surgery changes your digestive system and alters the way alcohol is metabolized.
- Empty calories: Alcohol is high in calories but contain no nutritional value which contribute to weight regain or stall weight loss progress. Additionally, drinking alcohol can interfere with the body’s ability to absorb nutrients, which is already a concern post-surgery.
- Gastrointestinal irritation: Especially when consumed in large quantities, alcohol can irritate the stomach lining and cause issues like acid reflux, inflammation, gastritis and increased stomach ulcers which are heightened risks with the intragastric balloon.
Recommendations:
- Limit your alcohol intake: The more you limit your alcohol consumption, the better your weight loss and overall health outcomes will be. Ensure you have at least 4-5 days per week that are alcohol free and limit your intake to 2 standard drinks on any one occasion.
- Low-sugar wines and spirits: If you choose to consume alcohol, opt for low-sugar wines or clear spirits with non-sugary mixers. For example Vodka, Gin and Tequila. Mix these with non-sugary mixers like soda water or have them neat in small amounts. Avoid sugary syrups, soft drinks and juices.
- Dilute your beverages: Water down your drink with plenty of ice to reduce its potency.
- Alcohol-free and low alcohol content options: There are now many alcohol-free or lower alcohol content wines, beers, and spirits on the market that replicate the taste of alcohol. These can be great alternatives for social situations, however check the nutritional profile as drinks like mocktails can still have a high sugar content.
- Limit quantity: Due to increased sensitivity, it’s important to start with a very small amount of alcohol (e.g. 1 standard drink or less) and observe how your body reacts. Always drink slowly (sips) and eat before consuming alcohol.
A standard drink is:
- 100 mL of wine (13% alcohol)
- 285 mL of full-strength beer (4.9% alcohol)
- 30 mL of spirits (40% alcohol)
6. Wait period: Most bariatric specialists recommend waiting at least 6-12 months post-surgery before consuming alcohol to allow your body time to adjust and heal properly.

- Consult your doctor: Always consult with your healthcare provider or dietitian before reintroducing alcohol into your diet after bariatric surgery.
- Eat Before Drinking: Always consume alcohol after a meal help slow absorption and reduce the risk of becoming overly intoxicated too quickly.
Every individual’s tolerance to alcohol after bariatric surgery is unique, so it’s crucial to approach alcohol consumption with caution and under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
