Weight loss procedures are an effective tool that can significantly aid in reducing body weight. However, effectiveness can vary depending on the individual’s commitment towards healthy eating, habits and progressive lifestyle changes. During the initial phase of your weight loss procedure, most people are very motivated to make changes to their diet. However, over time as patients get comfortable with the effects of their procedure, old habits can return and impact their overall weight loss journey.

Here are 7 unhelpful eating habits to monitor for and address during your weight loss journey to ensure optimal results and maintain long-term health outcomes.

  1. Overeating

The intragastric balloon works by taking up space in your stomach, making you feel content with a smaller portion size. Similarly, a gastric sleeve or bypass procedure decreases your stomach’s volume and therefore your food intake. However, overeating and going beyond fullness can negate this effect, leading to discomfort, nausea, and diminished results. It’s crucial to listen to your body’s signals, use and stop eating when you feel satisfied.

  1. Eating Too Quickly

Eating too quickly can prevent you from recognizing when you’re full, causing you to eat more than necessary. This can result in discomfort and reduced effectiveness of the balloon. Chewing your food thoroughly and eating slowly helps you better manage your portions and improves digestion.

  1. Consuming High-Calorie Liquids

High-calorie beverages like sugary drinks, alcohol, and fruit juices can quickly add excess calories without making you feel full. These empty calories can hinder your weight loss progress. Instead, opt for water as your main beverage, herbal teas, and other low-calorie drinks.

  1. Skipping Meals

Skipping meals can lead to extreme hunger later in the day, increasing the likelihood of overeating. It can also slow down your metabolism, making weight loss more difficult. Aim for regular, balanced meals to keep your metabolism steady and your hunger in check.

  1. 5. Relying on Processed Foods

Processed foods are often high in unhealthy fats, sugars, and sodium, which can sabotage your weight loss efforts. Focus on whole, unprocessed foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains to provide your body with the nutrients it needs without the extra calories.

  1. Not Staying Hydrated

Proper hydration is essential for weight loss and overall health. Not drinking enough water can lead to dehydration, which can be mistaken for hunger, leading to overeating. Aim to drink at least 8 cups of water a day and more if you’re physically active.

  1. Mindless Eating

Eating while distracted, such as watching TV or working, can lead to consuming more food than necessary. Practice mindful eating by paying attention to your meals, savouring each bite, and recognizing when you’re satisfied.

Addressing these common eating habits can help you maximize the benefits of your bariatric procedure, leading to sustainable weight loss and improved health. Remember, this journey is about creating lasting, healthy habits that will support your long-term well-being.
