What is Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (Gastric Sleeve Surgery)?
The Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG), a bariatric procedure, permanently reduces the stomach size by up to 85% using a stapling device. This process shapes the remaining stomach into a tube, or sleeve.
The gastric sleeve is the most-commonly performed weight loss procedure in Australin and is performed laparoscopically (keyhole surgery), where patients typically stay in hospital for 2-3 nights after the procedure. When compared to other bariatric procedures such as the gastric bypass, the LSG has a lower complication risk.
How does Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy work?

Patients are only able to eat a small meal before the stomach is full. As the stomach fills to accommodate the meal, nerves are activated which send signals to the brain to indicate the stomach is full, and to stop eating.
Hormonal Adjustment
Patients do not experience as much hunger after the procedure. This is because the removed portion of the stomach is responsible for producing ghrelin, a hormone that induces hunger.
What does the surgery involve?
During the sleeve gastrectomy procedure, your Bariatric Surgeon will perform laparoscopic or keyhole surgery, which typically takes 45-60 minutes. Using a stapling device, the surgeon will permanently remove up to 85% of your stomach, leaving behind a tubular structure known as a sleeve. This surgical intervention usually requires a hospital stay of 2-3 nights for postoperative monitoring.
After the surgery, you will receive guidance to follow a diet progression. This plan will involve gradually reintroducing various food textures over several weeks, ensuring a smooth transition as your body adjusts to the changes.
Weight Loss With The Laparascopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
Patients who undergo gastric sleeve surgery experience faster weight loss than with most other surgical or non-surgical options, with an expected weight loss of around 20-30% Total Body Weight loss over 12 months. For example, a 100 kg person would lose 20-30kg on average. We often refer to “excess weight loss” (EWL) when measuring the results from weight loss surgery, and we typically see around 60% EWL at 12 months with the LSG.
